If you're not sure where to start, start here.

Best first episode

  • ๐ŸŒธ
Inokashira Park โ€” Week 1 Monday

30 minutes from Shinjuku, free to enter, one of the best parks in Tokyo. The pond, the shrine on the island, the street musicians, the Ghibli Museum gate around the corner. A good first day out in Tokyo that most people have either never done or done as a tourist and want to experience as a local.

Best for working remotely

  • ๐Ÿ’ป
    Shimokitazawa โ€” Week 4 Friday โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

The highest workability rating in the guide. Multiple specialty coffee shops, relaxed atmosphere, slow pace. A full working afternoon followed by the neighbourhood itself in the evening โ€” theatre, record shops, the best cafรฉ scene in west Tokyo.

  • ๐Ÿ’ป
    Kichijoji โ€” Week 3 Friday โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Strong second choice for remote work. Outbound Coffee is one of Tokyo's best specialty shops. The Inokashira Park walk in the morning, work in the afternoon, Harmonica Yokocho in the evening โ€” a perfect full day.

Best hidden spot

  • ๐ŸŒฟ
Todoroki Valley โ€” Week 4 Monday

A 1km forest gorge inside Tokyo's 23 wards. Bamboo, a waterfall, a temple, and virtually no tourists on a weekday morning. It feels impossible until you're standing in it. One of the most surprising places in this entire guide.

Best big day out

  • โ›ฐ๏ธ
Mount Takao โ€” Week 3 Monday

50 minutes from Shinjuku, one of the most climbed mountains in the world, and genuinely worth it. Leave early on a clear weekday, take Trail 6 up (the river gorge route), summit with Fuji views on a clear day, descend via Trail 1, eat soba at the base. Full day, one of the best things you can do within an hour of central Tokyo.

Best for collectors and obsessives

  • ๐ŸŽฎ
    Nakano โ€” Week 2 Friday

4 minutes from Shinjuku. Nakano Broadway is four floors of manga, anime figures, vintage games and idol merchandise. Record shops and izakayas around the station. The anti-Akihabara โ€” quieter, more local, more interesting if you actually know what you're looking for.

  • ๐ŸŽธ
    Koenji โ€” Week 1 Friday

Vintage fashion, live music venues, punk bars and record shops. The counterculture neighbourhood that has resisted gentrification longer than anywhere in central Tokyo. Go on a Friday evening and stay late.
