Before you go
Kiez Traveller is designed for independent exploration. Most of it is straightforward β but a few things are worth knowing before you head out.
London weather changes without warning, especially in spring and autumn. Check the forecast before you leave but don't trust it past midday. For Greater London nature episodes β Epping Forest, the Lee Valley, the outer parks β waterproofs and an extra layer are worth carrying even on clear days. Paths in woodland and on canal banks become slippery after rain.
The episodes in this guide are designed for solo exploration. Most are in residential or parkland areas that are safe in daylight. For outer Greater London and woodland episodes, tell someone where you're going and roughly when to expect you back. Mobile signal can be patchy in parts of Epping Forest and the Lee Valley. A powerbank and a downloaded offline map are sensible precautions.
London's canal network is central to several episodes. The towpaths are narrow in places, can be slippery when wet, and run alongside deep water with no barrier. Don't swim in the canals β the water is cold, murky, and contains hazards not visible from the surface. Watch your footing at night and when paths are wet. Keep children and dogs under close control near the water's edge.
London has an extensive cycle network and bikes move fast and quietly. Always look for cycle lanes before stepping off the pavement β they run directly alongside many pavements and are easy to miss. On busy routes like the Embankment, the canal towpaths, and in the City, cycle traffic is heavy and riders are moving faster than they appear. Look both ways before crossing any marked lane.
Urban foxes are common across all London boroughs and are bolder than you'd expect β they'll approach picnic areas and sit watching you from a few metres away. They are not dangerous but they are wild animals. Don't feed them, don't try to handle them, and don't leave food unattended. Some parks in Greater London also have fallow deer β particularly Richmond Park. Give deer plenty of space during rutting season (OctoberβNovember) when stags can be unpredictable.
TfL revenue inspectors operate on all lines β Tube, Overground, Elizabeth line, DLR, and buses. Always tap in at the start and tap out at the end of every journey. Failing to tap out results in the maximum fare being charged automatically. On buses, tap in only. Keep your phone battery above zero or carry an Oyster card as backup.
Pickpockets are active on crowded Tube lines β particularly the Central, Northern and Jubilee lines β and in tourist areas. Keep your phone in a pocket you can feel, not a bag. Don't have your wallet in your back pocket. Be aware on escalators. The episodes in this guide mostly take you away from tourist hotspots, which means this is less of a concern, but commonsense city awareness applies on the way there and back.
